North Reading Select Board scraps 3 Washington Street as senior center site over cost and parking. The Site Evaluation Committee, chaired by Ron Kern, scored the 66-year-old building 2.27 out of 5 across 12 criteria, citing an $8 million to $11 million total cost, a shortfall of parking at 43 spaces against a needed 80 to 100, and an inadequate septic system. "It was pretty unanimous that we have concerns with parking," said committee member Jackie.
The board voted unanimously to pull the article from the October 5 town meeting warrant, which it then signed, including $330,317 for continued fire station planning and a $3.5 million modular classroom replacement contingent on a November debt exclusion. Selectmen also voted 4-1, over Nicholas Masse's objection, not to recommend a citizen's petition letting town employees serve as town moderator.
